Life at RHCDS

Life at RHCDS

The early years of education are critical as they are a time in which children cultivate habits and interests that will last the rest of their lives. This is why our academic program includes not only aspects essential to foundational development, but to the development of a lifetime of success.
As a Kindergarten-Grade 8 institution, our role in educating our students is unique. We do not know what careers students will pursue or what industries will be most important when they finish college and enter the job market. We do know, however, that students will need to be critical thinkers to contribute to the unforeseen challenges of the future.

From that perspective, we focus on teaching our students real-life skills like problem-solving, presentation skills, and technological acumen. We focus on instilling self-confidence, a sense of responsibility, and purpose. We give students opportunities to succeed and opportunities to fail. We provide an environment where they feel encouraged and safe in their explorations and where students can build a personal foundation that will guide and support them in high school, college, and beyond.

In this section you will find information on our school policies, Parents Association, school uniforms and more. You will also have access to school publications and regular communications that are sent home to RHCDS families. We are committed to providing our parents with up-to-date information about scheduled activities, classroom functions and important upcoming events. We hope you enjoy learning about our campus as you read through various publications. Click Here for our forms page.

If you would like more information about our campus, please contact our Admissions Office at (310) 377-4848 or email Molly Skyar @ mskyar@rhcds.com.

Parents Association

Every parent of a Country Day School student is invited to be an active member of the Parents Association. This organization’s function is to assist in school-sponsored events during the year. Parents can become involved in a number of ways, including the following leadership roles:

Grade Parents

Grade Parents work closely with the faculty and the PA President to plan, organize, and support events and activities for their respective grade levels.

Committee Chair

A Committee Chair is responsible for coordinating and organizing a group of parents in an important school program or event.

Focus Group

The Focus Group is composed of one parent per grade level. A Focus Group member encourages information flow between the Administration and parents.

All parents are encouraged to get involved in the Parents Association in support roles. We encourage parents to learn of volunteer opportunities by attending their Grade Level Coffees and the Parents Association Meeting.  Click Here for a complete list of parent volunteer opportunities.

Parents Association Meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month at 8 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. PA Meetings are very well attended, which speaks highly of our parents’ commitment to their children’s education. These meetings inform parents of upcoming events and activities throughout the year. Special speakers are frequently invited to speak on a variety of topics including health, nutrition, finances, parenting tools, and current events.

Parent involvement at RHCDS is encouraged and appreciated but not mandatory. For more information or to become involved, please contact PA President, Josh Cunningham-Corso, joshc5@mac.com.

Parent Handbook

The Rolling Hills Country Day School Parent Handbook is designed to give our families an overview of expected goals and standards on campus. Please review this material and use it as a resource for questions about the school and its programs.  Topics are listed alphabetically for your convenience.

Volunteer Opportunities

Members of the Parents Association (PA) dedicate many hours to each of the School’s events and activities. Our Committee Chairs and their parent volunteers work very hard to provide our students with an enriching experience and a memorable school year.

Our major events include:

Science Day
Multicultural Day
HeyDay
Olympic Day

Other parent volunteer opportunities include:

Art At Your Fingertips
Book Fair
Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Friday Lunch
Holiday Giving
Hospitality
Late Start Committee
Library
Lost and Found
Parent Social
Silent Auction
Uniform Closet

In addition to volunteering their time through various school functions and activities, parents are invited to participate in the School’s Focus Group. The Focus Group is comprised of one parent representative per grade level. The Group allows Administration and the parent representative to exchange ideas and information. All parents are invited to express their opinions and concerns during the Open Forum portion of the monthly meeting which is within the meeting’s first 15 minutes.

Click Here for more information on our volunteer opportunities. If you would like to become involved, please contact PA President, Josh Cunningham-Corso, joshc5@mac.com.

Forms and Flyers

Welcome to the Parent Forms and Flyers page. Parents/guardians can download the school forms, complete the form on a computer, print, sign, and return to the school. Downloading the form to a computer does not automatically transfer your information to the school.

Uniforms

Rolling Hills Country Day School uniforms can be purchased through Lands’ End.

Purchases can be made using the Lands’ End direct link.

You may also order via phone at 1-800-469-2222 and reference preferred school number 900168758.

Please click here for the RHCDS Uniform Checklist.

All uniform and clothing items should be clearly labeled with the child’s name. Parents should carefully monitor their student’s uniform with particular attention to the following items. Students who are not in uniform will be sent to the office, and parents will be contacted and asked to bring in the correct uniform item(s).

Students are to wear the school uniform, and only the sweater, sweatshirts or jacket included on the uniform list, sold in the school office, or the outdoor education sweatshirts for Grades Five through Eight. Students will be asked to remove all non-uniform sweaters and sweatshirts.

Girls’ jumpers/skirts in Kindergarten through Grade Five are to be no shorter than two inches above the knee. Girls’ skirts in Grades Six through Eight are to be no shorter than three inches above the knee. The School’s expectation is that student clothing is modest in appearance. We ask that girls wear shorts under the school uniform jumpers and skirts. However, these shorts are never to extend below the hemline of the uniform.

SCHOOL SHOES: Shoes are to be PLAIN, ALL-WHITE LEATHER athletic-‐style shoes. No canvas or mesh, no “heelies” (wheel in heel of shoe), no high platform soles or decorations, sequins, rhinestones, light‐ups, etc. are allowed on shoes. All white shoelaces are mandatory. Girls in Kindergarten through Grade Four may wear navy leather Mary Jane style or navy and white saddle style shoes. If you have questions about a particular type of shoe, please call the school office for direction and clarification.

WINTER UNIFORMS: Girls will change into the winter uniform upon return from Thanksgiving break through spring break.

P.E. UNIFORMS, SWEATSHIRTS, ETC.
Uniform shorts and shirts are required for Physical Education for boys and girls in Grades Five through Eight. One shirt and one pair of shorts were included on the summer tuition statement (two pairs each for Fifth Graders), and these items will be distributed to students at the start of the school year.

Parents may purchase additional P.E. shorts and shirts; the cost of each shirt is $15.00 and the cost of each pair of shorts is $20.00. Swim bags are available for all grades in the front office for $25.00 each.

The regular school shoes (athletic style with white leather) are also worn for Physical Education class. Please note that for swimming, girls are to wear one-piece swimsuits. Goggles are strongly recommended.

Dress Uniform: Mandatory every Monday
