Second Grade students at RHCDS spent over a month this winter reading Caldecott award-winning books in our school library and at home. They enjoyed the varying styles of illustrations and made predictions about which book would win for 2017. Collectively, they read all of the winning books from 1938 to the present, including the most recent 2017 medal winner, Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat by Javaka Steptoe.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of the nineteenth-century English illustrator, Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The students were awarded “Gold Medals” of their own for their participation in reading the entire collection of Caldecott award-winning books. A wonderful accomplishment by our second graders!
